This Is One Great USB Powered Microphone

USB powered mics have become extremely popular among casual podcasters, as they are generally very easy to use straight out of the box. These mics don’t need any external amplifiers or audio interfaces because they are built into the mic. This enables the mic to take up a very small footprint on my desk.

This review is on the Plugable Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone. This mic by Plugable included a mini tripod, a tripod adapter and a USB cable. This enabled me to start using the mic right out of the box. The included tripod has very firm legs with rubber feet, and seems to hold the mic steadily. The tripod adapter is used to mount the mic to the tripod. It simply screws on to the top of the tripod, and then the mic can be screwed in into it. The tripod adapter can also be used to mount the mic to standard mic boom and scissor stands.

The mic itself has great build quality, and doesn’t feel cheap at all. It has heft and doesn’t feel like a hollow plastic mic. The mic is constructed with a matte black finished metal casing, with a mesh metal capsule cover. There is a foam windscreen inside the capsule, to provide better vocals.

Under the imprinted logo on the barrel, is a blue status LED, which lights up when the mic is connected to power. At the base of the mic is the USB port, where it can be connected to the computer via the included USB cable.

As for sound quality, I was very impressed with what this thing can produce. The mic records in 16 bit, with a 44 kHz sampling rate and a 20 Hz to 16 Hz frequency response. I found the vocals were rich and full, and much clearer than the built in mic on my laptop. I would compare it to the quality of other popular USB mics. Just one thing, in order to get the best sound out of the mic, place the mic far from the computers fan or it will pick up that noise.

Although this is not a studio grade mic, it works great for voice overs, podcasts and the occasional vocal recording. Sound can be recorded and be further perfected by using free programs, such as Audacity.

I received this mic at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest review, and these are my unbiased thoughts on the product.
